HB 146 Fire departments; purchase and maintain certain insurance coverage for firefighters; require

Voted on Tuesday February 7, 2017

Michael Caldwell's thoughts

This is a new bill responding to Governor Deal's veto of HB216 from last year, which would have recognized cancer as an eligible disease for firefighters to bring forth a workers comp claim. This legislation, rather than setting it up as a workers comp issue, establishes an insurance coverage for firefighter' cancer. The major benefit of this approach is that it avoids the need for firefighters to engage in litigation in order to be compensated. The author, Rep. Gravley, based his legislation on the way 30+ states have approached this issue with success.
