This Week in Your Capitol | 14-17 Feb 2017

Week 5: Legislative Days 17181920

Day 20 finished today, which means we are halfway through the 40 days the Constitution of Georgia allows us.

We have been in session from Tuesday through Friday of this week, and will be doing the same again next week (which will be legislative days 21-24). On Tuesday, SB 85 the Craft Beer bill made it out of the full House Regulated Industries committee and is now sits in the Rules Committee. That means its eligible to be scheduled for a House vote, and I hope to see that happen soon!

Though we had our busiest legislative calendar this week so far in the session, committee activity was quiet for me. Judging by committee hearing notices received today though, it would appear my Chairmen are looking to make up for that next week.

Some of the legislative highlights from this week:

HB 1 - The Georgia Space Flight Act passed out of the House and will make Georgia’s laws much more attractive to the private space exploration industry (companies like SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, etc.) Camden County in south Georgia is an extremely appealing site for a spaceport, and this removes final hurdles.

HB 9 - This bill prevents a practice known as “upskirting”. Upskirting is the non-consentual taking of photos up a woman’s skirt or dress. A court case recently deemed this as acceptable under the law claiming that a woman does not have this expectation of privacy under current law and that the General Assembly should take up the issue if we wished to fix it. We wished to fix it.

HB 44 - The FY 2017 Annual Budget for the State of Georgia. This covers state appropriations from July 1 2017 to June 30 2018. You can see more details on the spending plan for the upcoming year here.

The House of Representatives will remain out of session until Tuesday (21FEB) morning at 10:00am, and will continue through Friday (24FEB) afternoon.

Don’t forget that you can track my votes via my legislative tracker and on Twitter. You can also keep up with other legislative updates by following me on Facebook or my website.

Let me know if I can be of service to you- Please don’t ever hesitate to call. Thank you for allowing me to represent our families.

Go make it an Outstanding weekend!
