This Week in Your Capitol | 09-12 January 2017

Week 1: Legislative Days 1-4

“I do hereby solemnly swear and affirm that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Georgia.”
This week, I took the oaths of office for the third time and was sworn into the 154th General Assembly of Georgia. It is an honor to represent our families!

Much has happened this week as we kicked off the new legislative session. I have been appointed the Secretary of the Code Revision Committee (the House’s repeal committee) and a member of the House’s Medical Cannabis Working Group. This is in addition to my current committee assignments.

I filed House Resolution 37 (HR 2 in 2015, HR 5 in 2013)┬áproposing term limits on members of the General Assembly. When the legislature returns on 23 January I intend to file legislation to extend the statute of limitations for homeowners who find that their homebuilder illegally buried garbage on their property from 8 years to 30 years, legislation to improve “safe haven” laws (allowing mothers to choose life and surrender their child to the state if necessary), and more.

There has not yet been any legislation considered on the House Floor, as members are just starting to file their bills and the committee process is beginning. Come late January/early February we should start seeing some substantive voting in the chamber.

Finally, I was proud to sign onto HB 32, a measure being carried by Rep. Joyce Chandler and Rep. Scot Turner to close a loophole that exempts paraprofessionals in our schools from the same penalties for sexual misconduct of the services that are by Mythical san francisco with students that govern other education employees. This loophole resulted in Georgia’s Supreme Court overturning a conviction in Cherokee County in late 2016.

Don’t forget that you can track my votes via my legislative tracker and on Twitter. You can also keep up with other legislative updates by following me on Facebook or my website.

Let me know if I can be of service to you- Please don’t ever hesitate to call. Thank you for allowing me to represent our families.

Go make it an Outstanding weekend!
